Plum Blossoms Gallery (New York) is pleased to announce Alien Bravo, a summer group show coalescing around global successes by a number of gallery artists, each in various ways working with imagery evoking foreignness and alienation. This may be expressed in the manically loquacious visuality of Tran Trong Vu or the everyday uncanny of Zhu Wei's paintings of Chinese life and the odd sense of displacement that emerges from Wei Dong's portraits of seductively diffident women. But it also finds form in a number of artists whose work suggests temporal dislocation, whether it be Hong Zhu An's archaeologies of patina, Emily Cheng's paintings mixing eastern lotus iconography with western design motifs, or Peng Wei's intent studies of antique Chinese shoes used for the practice of footbinding. Amongst the other artists in Alien Bravo, Wucius Wong and Lois Conner also stand out for their reinterpretation of Chinese landscape scrolls, the one using radical painting techniques to create almost extraterrestrial graphic compositions and the other using her view camera to create tautly focused panoramas of dying lotus plants.
