For her first solo show in Hong Kong in three years, the Beijing-based painter Peng Wei will be exhibiting a stunning new series of traditional Chinese robe paintings on paper and silk. As one of the younger generation of Chinese contemporary artists who have taken a decidedly modern approach to the use of classical techniques, Peng Wei¡¦s work displays a profound knowledge of the Chinese ink painting tradition, which she insists is still alive and constantly changing. While Chinese robes may have become remnants of a bygone era, they appear in Peng Wei¡¦s paintings charged with fresh narratives and contexts ¡V an indication of the artist¡¦s self confessed fascination with the ¡¥lost and beautiful¡¦ items of the past. Born in 1974 in
Chengdu, Sichuan Province, Peng Wei graduated from Nankai University
with a BA in Fine Art in 1997, later earning an MPhil in Aesthetics
in 2000. Between 2000 and 2006 she was editor for Yishu magazine in
Beijing. Her works have been shown across the world and are admired
by local and international collectors alike. |
